Small Group Discussion Board
Assignment Goal: Analysis of Armstrong Chapter 5.
Task: Discuss Armstrong's concepts as well as your connections and questions among a small group of your peers.
Process: Enter the Discussion Board (under the “Communication” button).
You will be assigned to a small group with 4-5 of your peers.
You must complete the following participation to receive full credit for this assignment:
1. New Message Post: Create a New Message and post your comment/connection/question for chapter five.
Q: What am I supposed to post?
A: Consider this the replacement for the homework you usually hand in. Show a portion of the text to which you make a connection. Summarize Armstrong and explain your connection. Additionally, add on one question that you have about the chapter that you think your peers could respond to.
2. Reply Posts: Provide a substantive reply to at least two different posts from your peers.
Q: How am I supposed to reply, and what the heck does substantive mean?
A: Get a dictionary and look up substantive. Reply by commenting on the connection your peer has made. Don't just say, "I agree," or "I wrote on the same thing." That would not be 'substantive.' Really 'talk' to them about what they have written. Yeah, they may not go back and read what you wrote, but I will. What question did they ask? Could you offer them some response to that question? That would count, too.
3. No Ignored New Messages Allowed: Each original post that is posted by the due date must have at least one reply for the group to receive full credit for the entire assignment. Any post that goes without a reply will cost the entire group half the points for this assignment. Late New Message posts may still be used for reply for credit.
Grading: You will be graded on meeting deadlines and the quality* of your work:
New Message 5 points total
Two Replies 5 points total (that means 2.5 points each)
Total 10 points
Deadlines:
1. Create your New Message no later than midnight, Friday, April 9, 2010. Late posts will receive ½ credit, with no post being accepted after the reply deadline (see #2).
2. Reply no later than midnight on Monday, April 12, 2010. No late replies accepted for credit.
*I strongly recommend you compose your posts in whatever word processing program you use and save just as you would your regular journals. This will help with revising the work, using spell check, and having a back-up copy if anything should not function correctly in Educator or should you lose connectivity while working in Educator. Composing on a temporary web page can be problematic. Knowing this, and having been advised, there will be no exceptions for late or missing work due to computer errors that could have been avoided.
